The lunar railway that unrolls like a carpet
A future Moon base would need to move supplies long after its lander touched down. Building roads for every delivery could mean substantial work in abrasive lunar dust. FLOAT, a concept studied at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, starts with an unusual answer: unroll the railway directly onto the ground, then float the cargo above it.
The proposed track has several thin layers. Graphite provides a magnetic levitation effect that keeps the robots above the surface, while a flexible electrical circuit produces the force that moves them along. An optional solar layer could generate electricity in sunlight. The cargo robots themselves would have no moving parts, reducing contact with the dust that can wear down conventional mechanisms.
The attractive detail is its rearrangeable layout. A track could be rolled up and moved as a base's landing zones, storage areas, or excavation sites change. NASA selected FLOAT for a second phase of concept study in 2024, including smaller prototypes and lunar-analog testing. Turning the idea into useful infrastructure still requires proving that its materials, deployment, and controls can survive lunar conditions. For now, the floating freight network is a researched possibility, not a railway operating on the Moon.
